Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Coverage

Automobile insurance policies frequently provide a policyholder with personal injury protection (PIP) coverage.  PIP coverage typically provides coverage for a policyholder’s reasonable and necessary medical treatment, including chiropractic treatment, massage therapy, physical therapy, and other treatments, for injuries suffered as a result of an automobile accident.  In addition, PIP often covers lost wages and other incidental expenses incurred as a result of an injuries sustained in a motor vehicle collision.  PIP benefits are unique in the sense that they are available regardless of who is at fault for the automobile accident.  Although fault for the accident is not an issue, there are a numerous statutory and contractual considerations regarding the availability and amount of PIP benefits available under a policy.
